An image is recorded in Wikidocumentaries when a user interacts with an it by favouriting it or geolocating etc.

The metadata editor is available with the [[Image viewer]].

In the Image viewer, metadata from the source is read live when the image is displayed. At this point the metadata can either be saved to Wikidocumentaries as text or it can always remain only at the original site. Users enrich the data by associating the textual entries with existing or new Wikidata or Wikidocumentaries entities and translating descriptions into their languages. When the image metadata is considered ready enough, the image can be ingested to Wikimedia Commons. Wikidocumentaries only stores metadata that has been changed in Wikidocumentaries. Users can enrich the metadata by linking, translating or editing. When the metadata is considered mature enough, the image and the metadata can be imported to Wikimedia Commons.
