THIS PAGE IS OUTDATED

The site reads topics from Wikidata. It stores additional topics in the local Wikibase.

When federation with Wikibases becomes available, we can start using this technology. Local items will use Wikidata properties to define the local topics and link to either local or Wikidata items.

Installing and updating Wikibase
MediaWiki Extensions needed
* Login stuff
* VisualEditor
* Citoid

Local items and properties
In addition to topics, Wikidocumentaries stores additional data:

* API definitions of various repositories where Wikidocumentaries expects to find content.
* Image metadata for "saved" images
* Collections data
* Annotations
* Local articles. Articles are created in different languages and linked to the Wikibase items as local articles.
* Projects data. Users will publicly belong to the project
* Institution data. An institution is a user like an individual, but we may want to distinguish between the requirements for persons and organisations. We need to find the right way of doing this.
* User data will need to be stored partly openly on user-created public-facing pages, but for the personal data inside the system.

Initial data import and input
Ideal
* No need to import anything initially. Wikidocumentaries would merge local properties with Wikidata properties, and local items with Wikidata items in searches, gadgets etc.

Workaround
* Import all properties from Wikidata
* To reference items in Wikidata, it is possible to make a lookup in Wikidata and save the item locally with a reference to the Wikidata item

Using ShapeExpressions
* The scope of automatically created item may at some point be defined as a Shape Expression, which will probably be stored in the Federated Wikibases registry. This definition can help add whole thematic areas at once in a coordinated manner.
* The newly created items in Wikidocumentaries can be automatically imported to Wikidata, when they meet a certain criteria. This can also be expressed as a ShEx.
* Similar approaches will be investigated about Structured Data on Commons

The image viewer shows individual images or image sets. It allows zooming into the images, and acts as a gateway to image tools.

Discussion
See Discussion

Tools
Would it make sense to be able to switch seamlessly between the different tools? The interface concept makes it possible.

Related media through different links (not designed yet)
* Media about related topics. For example a link "More of this > Full image exploration view.
* Display of the organisation and optionally the collection from which the image is from.
* Ask the organisation who provided this media. Display also in the organisation's or collection's page. Notify the organisation by email.

Notes about IIIF
The image display may be built to Wikidocumentaries first without zoom, and bring zoomable images together with IIIF. The site will ideally display images from IIIF sources and possibly also ordinary large images in a IIIF viewer.

Server-side technology
Viewer options
See for example
* https://github.com/mejackreed/Leaflet-IIIF for a Leaflet solution
* Lightweight viewer https://github.com/durham-university/jalava and demo http://iiif.durham.ac.uk/jalava/universe.html with Elm

Wikidata properties
* IIIF manifest (P6108)
* relative position within image (P2677)

The timeline displays either everything time-bound or is a display format for a specific component, like Events. If there is only one timeline per page, there must be elaborate settings to configure what is shown on the timeline.

Timelines
Basic timeline
A basic timeline is text-based. It displays event items as well as auxiliary items based on dates only. An event based on an item can be accessed through a link. For topics that are only based on a date, an item can be created. The timeline can display the event as a point in time or a time span. It can be zoomed and scrolled horizontally in time. It displays events by row, earliest on top. The events can be scrolled vertically when there are more events than fit the frame. Events can also be filtered.
<gallery mode=packed heights=200>
</gallery>

Lineage timeline
A lineage display can be made an option to the basic timeline. In addition to the basic timeline, the lineage option displays family relations between people. It can display arrows to load more information and the item display can be expanded to display media about the topic arranged by time.
See also Family tree
</gallery>

Combined timeline
Gallery
A gallery can be joined with a basic timeline to provide a more visual display. Gallery in the events component is based on dates in addition to event items. Gallery topics link to the event's topic pages when the event is based on an event item. An item can be created for topics that are only based on a date.

A gallery can slide horizontally to match the event on the timeline. The items are initially similar to any gallery items. They can be made richer over time with language technology.

The timeline can read external sources and display them federated with local items. For external items, adding the data to Wikidata/Wikidocumentaries will be made possible.

A basic gallery in any component can be considered a timeline when the items are sorted by time. See also Gallery.
Gallery of data groups TBD
Gallery items could be created from textual data including subgroups, such as household members.
<gallery mode=packed heights=200>
</gallery>

Map
A map component can be added as a third element to the combined timeline.

Controls
Filtering & faceting
By event type and group
* Life events
** Birth, marriage, birth, death or marriage in family, death, religious events, anniversaries
* Professional events
** Education, graduation, employment, awards
* External (contextual events)

Scope
* Degrees of separation (related people, related organisations)
* Family with different degrees
* Contextual events (house, village, municipality, workplace, country)
Actions
* Make a date event into an item
* Create an event for the topic
Search
Editing events
BiographySampo extracts sentences about events in the Finnish National Biographies. They contain structured information about the related actors and the date. These sentences can be read via SPARQL and arranged on a timeline. The following is a scenario of a crowdsourcing interface to turn those sentences into structured data.
