Images scenarios
* Favouriting the image > saving to a user-defined collection
* Editing image metadata
* Geolocating the image
* Choosing as a header image
* Removing a falsely associated image from the Images section of a topic, an act that in reality adds more data to image data object, such as the correct related topic. This data could be further user to disambiguate topics.

Foreseeable future interactions:
* Identifying people, places, and date

See also http://wikidocumentaries.wmflabs.org/wiki/Images

What is saved of the image with this first click?
# Only the necessary pointers to the original image
## Image url
## It may be wise to save also the image hash to be able to compare with other images on the web.
# or all metadata that the project can map?

When the user enriches data by associating textual data with Wikidata/Wikidocumentaries entities, how is additional data saved?
# Raw and refined values are saved in the same property, one as a qualifier. If the textual comes first, then it must be that as the value, and the linked value as a qualifier.
# Only when the user links a value, values are recorded. This would allow the same structure to be vice-versa, the linked value as the main value, and the original textual value as a qualifier.
# Raw and enriched values are saved in different properties (I cannot imagine why)

**Scenarios of uploading to Wikimedia Commons**

The minimum file info is saved immediately into Wikidocumentaries and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons when the data becomes complete enough
* The file can be automatically saved to Wikimedia Commons, if it meets a certain minimum criteria, for example existing title, description, copyright notice, attribution, year or the lack of it.

The file is immediately saved into Wikimedia Commons at any user interaction
* Commons can accept partially structured data
* It will however have notability policies that are more strict than what Wikidocumentaries allows
* The original image will remain at the original source if the image is removed from Wikimedia Commons.
* The original image can be backed up in Internet Archive to prevent it from disappearing if removed from Commons or the source.

*Synchoronising sources*
* How to deal with varying data of the same image, evolving metadata on any of the platforms, and serving the enhanced data further.

Upload stuff
Where
Vue function that can be attached to different parts of the UI as part of another action or in itself
* Image actions (image actions menu, image section mass actions, image viewer)
** Save image to a list
** Promote image to header picture
* Blacklist an image / disassociate with a topic (image actions menu, image section mass actions)
* Use a tool such as geotagging (image actions menu, image viewer)
* Modify any parameter in the metadata (image viewer metadata editing section)

What
* Invoke OAuth
* Check image hash for duplicates
* Upload image file
* Write original string values to SDC properties that accept string values. Note on source language.
* If there are automatically mapped item-values for properties, upload those to respective properties in SDC. (*
* Properties in SDC that expect items cannot be imported. They will display as not resolved (red) in the metadata viewer. They need user interaction to be resolved and updated.
* The linked Wikimedia user will be noted as the uploader. Generally, the originating GLAM, the distribution platform and the image license can be recorded.

*) Every user interaction could contribute to a match database on Wikidocumentaries. This data should include the combination of
* the string value
* the Wikidata/Wikidocumentaries property
* the linked Wikidata/Wikidocumentaries item
* enough context, TBD: The originating institution (for example, a certain GLAM uses a character combination to define a certain location. This string is connected with a Wikidata item, but it is only valid in the metadata of this GLAM or their collection.)

Disasters
When a disaster hits, such as an earthquake, pandemic or conflict, Wikidocumentaries may be useful for making sense of the information. Here are some random thoughts that can be added to and elaborated over time.

Complementing disaster mapping
* HOT OSM Tasking Manager data may be good to present in Wikidocumentaries. Possible places include the main map for browsing data and all maps displaying areas of interest. They should be displayed by default, because no-one will look for them behind menus.
* OSM and Wikidata are powerful together. A linked geographic item makes available loads of information that can be used by the aid workers. These should be identified, and made into campaigns.
* Display external data and ingest. Identify what and how to store, how to visualize and make available. For example earthquake data: What is important?
* Enhance geographic data
** Add administrative areas and link to OSM
** Add English labels

Data in general
* Link topics in a way they can be found and visualized. Identify missing properties in visualization.

Images
* Identify related images, tag with SDC, make a campaign.
* Tap into news image sources that might allow open licensing. Do they exist?
* Create 3D mashups from geolocated photos. Make photo contribution campaign for images prior to a disaster.

User contributions from the ground
* Identify the needs.
* Geolocating

How can this help save lives
* Gather and visualize information from several sources to highlight crucial hazards, existing structures, historical data.
* Translate information. Articles should be automatically translatable on-the-fly from any language.
* Make available information from news sources in some way.

Wikipedia
* Make use of analyzing rapidly evolving Wikipedia articles to identify important topics.

Wikisource materials
The structure of a Wikisource item
Books are represented in wikidocumentaries by items for works and items for editions.

An item can be interpreted as work, if it
* has editions
* has a Wikipedia article link
* has an incoming link to it as work related to an edition

An item can be interpreted as edition, if it
* has a Wikisource link
* is defined as edition
* defines a work it is an edition of

Errors and poorly described items exist.

Wikisource across languages
The data that can be read to Wikidocumentaries needs to be uniform across language editions. The following most likely are
* index page
* transcluded pages (NS:0)
* author pages
* page order
Note reading order!

Materials linked to Wikidata items
* PDF / Wikimedia Commons
* Wikisource index page
* Wikisource link

Wikisource in Wikidocumentaries
The page of the work/edition
Header section
The header section could take into account the image of the pdf and display that.

Article section
* For a work, Wikipedia article is displayed in the article section by default, and possible Wikisource materials secondarily
* For an edition, Wikisource materials are displayed by default, Wikipedia article secondarily for error cases.
* Options for what Wikisource materials to display:
** PDF (the Wikidocumentaries article section is not well suited for PDF)
** Text from Wikisource. There could be several editions. Relevant section needs to be chosen:
*** For example 5 first pages, maybe lazy loading of full text?
*** Table of content. Links may backlink to Wikisource Ns:0 subpages for chapters or open the viewer modal.
* New menu!
** Switch Show article / Show Wikisource – take into account the possibility of multiple editions in Wikisource
** Download ebook (using https://ws-export.wmcloud.org/) + popup for selecting the type
** Read in pdf viewer
** Read in Wikisource viewer
** Listen to the text
** View/edit in Wikisource (external link)
** Indicator whether editions exist in other languages

Reader modal
* PDF – using the reader from IA https://bookreader.toolforge.org/
* Wikisource texts – Using the Italian gadget to be modified for Wikidocumentaries

Author
* Virtual bookshelf (Works component) – needs to include editions if not already so
* More display options: Timeline

Publisher
Similar

Summary of new development
* Add menu in the article section with actions
* Decide what would be displayed in the article space for Wikisource. For example 5 first pages, after which you need to enter a reader
* Add condition in the script for selecting the default view mode and switching the mode
* Create universal pdf reader from the IA reader, make a modal for it
* Create Wikisource reader from the Italian reader, make a modal for it
* In the readers, add an actions menu
** Close
** Download
** View pdf / Text if a Wikisource item
** View in Wikisource if a Wikisource item
* Integrate Wikisource download script into Wikidocumentaries
* Add timeline visualization
* Check that all works, edition, author, publisher links are displayed in WDOC
* One more case to perfect the faceting / filtering functions as well as lazy loading
* Add pdf image in the header
* Add Table of Contents of each editions (where available) and backlink to Wikisource Ns:0 subpages for chapters

Collectionscope is an open source software engine for visualizing museum collections across time and space.
Collectionscope collects, processes, and transforms collections metadata into digital information that can be visualized and explored on multiple platforms, including immersive 3D environments.

Plotting this data across time and space provides engaging access to entire collections and the objects within, as well as the opportunity to dive into rich and complex institutional histories.

Built with open source tools and libraries, the engine is freely available to other cultural institutions to visualize their own collections and develop experiences that suit their unique learning goals and audiences.

This is a collaboration with Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova. The goal is to display the interconnections of the museum collections with the help of Wikidocumentaries. New developments will be made available for all users.

The museum is located in a building that replaced a wealthy and central part of medieval Turku in Finland, after a fire devastated the part of the city. Part of the museum is focused on archaeology of the site, while the other part focuses on contemporary art.

Objectives
* Display information about archaeological finds, and the history of the houses and plots where they were found, and the people who lived there.
* Find ways to overcome the scope limitations of the Wikimedia projects. Notability becomes an issue with historical biographies. The granularity of archaeological finds challenges the scope of Wikidata.
* Contribute to open knowledge as much as possible.
* Serve museum visitors onsite and online.

Data
Available content and platforms
* Content that can be published through Wikimedia projects
** Wikidata items about notable historical personalities, geographical sites
** Wikipedia articles of the most notable personalities
** Images on Wikimedia Commons
* Source literature
* Images released by the museum in Finna (TBD)

The need for extended storage
* Archaeological finds: data, articles, and images about them
* Biographical information, especially articles
* Historical geodata: houses, plots, street etc.
* Historical documents?
* Linking between them

Data management scenarios
* Use Wikimedia projects as much as possible
* Develop a complementary or alternative data storage or outlet that can be controlled oneself: Google Sheets or Wikibase. The data solution should be scalable and/or replicable.

Wikibase
The Wikibase alternative could be made for this project or as a shared one (for example Wikidocumentaries Wikibase or a local history Wikibase). Developing the federated ecosystem of Wikibases is a thing we want to contribute to with Wikidocumentaries.

Desired developments for display components
General
* Grouping and faceting of the objects based on most used properties. In this case for example
** Type of object (instance of)
** Creation date
** Era
** Place of discovery
** Use

* Different visualizations, such as family relations, professional relations etc. This can be realized as separate displays in the exhibition space, or by including a network visualization in all components, or through faceting as part of the Wikidocumentaries site.
* Custom styles and features for use in the exhibition space
* Linking to Wikidocumentaries pages instead of Wikidata pages.

Archaeological finds (Component: In this location)
* Visually more engaging, for example grouping
* Display of an individual objects with more metadata
* Possibly a bespoke component to display a specific external dataset

Map
* Map shapes for more objects
* Display of historical data
* Display georeferenced old maps

Article
* Make sure articles can be written on all the items, and displayed on Wikidocumentaries
* Either write in a dedicated repository (Wikibase) or enable displaying external articles

People
* Display people related to a house in all possible ways: family tree, network, timeline
* Develop a view that brings together the different interrelations: houses and households spatially, family relations, business relations and interactions, the passing of time

Similar
* Enhance the relevance of the related entries. The selection criteria can be enhanced to better take into account archaeological finds.

Images
* Enhance the relevance of the related images. This requires an in-depth development project to images, and there are many ways in which it can be made better.

Historical geodata
OpenHistoricalMap
It would be relatively easy to read shapes from OpenHistoricalMap to Wikidocumentaries similarly to how they are read from OSM now.
* OHM entities can be linked to Wikidata
* Based on the Wikidata ID, they can be linked to Wikidocumentaries
* Shapes can be managed with the iD editor in OpenHistoricalMap

IIIF
In parallel, it would be a great idea to display IIIF data. This will open up several new opportunities that can be explored further.
Displaying the place in the location component
See the page about Maps.

Finding historical maps
User story: I browse a topic page and I wish to find historical maps that depict that place. I would like to overlay the map on the present-day map and see where all the places are located.

Location component
* I will go to the location component. The component initially displays either a pin or an area or both for the page topic. To find and select a historical map overlay, I open the base map menu.
* In the base map menu, there is an option to display a scanned map for this topic's area. I can click to choose which map to display.
* In the dialogue that opens, I can select any of the maps that has been georeferenced for this area. I can filter and facet the selection based on depicted time, map scale and possibly other properties.
* I can extend the search to maps that have not been georeferenced. The functionality is similar to the independent maps component - how to unite the two?

Maps component
* I navigate to the maps component to see which maps are available for this area.

Controls
* I can facet the maps based on several criteria
** Warped / unwarped
** Timeframe
** Scale
** TBD
* I can do the same actions as for images after saving to Wikimedia Commons
** Verify that the map depicts the topic. The map is saved to Wikimedia Commons.
** Confirm that the maps does not depict this topic. The blacklist is saved somewhere, or the image is saved to Commons with the corrected topic.
** Add to a collection etc.

Actions
* I can georeference un unwarped map in Wikidocumentaries using the Georeferencing tool. The image is first saved into Wikimedia Commons, if not already there. How will it be made available for IIIF?
* I can annotate items on the unwarped map using an annotation interface. The annotation geometries are saved to xxx, and they can be warped along with the map (Allmaps).

Input, output
Source imagery
* The maps are read from several sources. The list will be maintained in APIs page.
** Image files from all the image sources connected to Wikidocumentaries, filtered by type map.
** Georeferenced maps from tile servers.
** Maps from IIIF servers serving old maps

Traced geographic shapes with properties
* OSM

Component content
* Saving the sorted, filtered and faceted result of a content component or a search in Wikidocumentaries. Internally that would be a configuration of search conditions, that consists of a SPARQL query and filters applied after displaying the query. It might be clever to include everything in the query itself.
* The user can export the resulting SPARQL query.
* The data table can be exported (csv, json)
* An embeddable component with the query and the content?
* Share a link to the result. That should point to the topic page and the subsection in it.
Remix overview
2020-07-18T09:51:39Z

Admin: /* Wikidocumentaries licensing */

Welcome to view an exercise of the many possibilities of remixing content in Wikidocumentaries and how to license them!

What is this?
What is Wikidocumentaries?
Wikidocumentaries is a maker space for citizen historians. It collects data and content from openly licensed outlets around the world about any topic – people, places, buildings, events and more. The topics cover everything that Wikipedia does, and it is possible to add even more personal, local, or generally less recognized historical topics to Wikidocumentaries.

Wikidocumentaries is made not only for exploring but for reusing the materials that are found with it. It will be possible to annotate, correct data, locate and identify, or use the materials as part of further works. Wikidocumentaries will provide functions and tools for this work.

What is this page?
This is an overview of licensing issues related to existing and imagined reuse opportunities provided by the site. This page is created as an exercise in the Creative Commons Certificates program, but it will remain as an overview and reference for guiding our reuse practices.

If you have ideas or questions related to this exercise, please add them to the talk page. (Unfortunately joining the wiki is still a bit of a pain, but please give it a try! You can also mail wikidocumentaries@gmail.com or use any of the other comms methods mentioned in the menu at the bottom of the page.)

Finding out which works can be remixed together
In order to specify which works can be used in each kind of reuse scenario, we must be clear on the concepts affecting copyright and licensing.
# What is our collection and what kind of licensing conditions do we have there?
# Which CC license conditions can be used together in a remix?
# When is reuse a remix and when only a collection/compilation?
# Analysis of different reuse scenarios

Our collection
Wikidocumentaries displays materials from several outlets. These outlets are content aggregators that gather and display material from other organisations. All the source images have their individual copyright status and licenses. Currently Wikidocumentaries only reads media that is compatible with Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA or more open). With more detailed control we could display more content but limit reuse of the content if the licenses do not allow that.

Media is currently read from the following services
* Finna, the Finnish content aggregator for museums, archives, and libraries. Includes PD, CC-licensed media, and copyrighted media. Media is hosted at the source organizations.
* Wikimedia Commons: Images, maps. Includes PD and CC-licensed media.
* Creative Commons Search: Images. Includes PD and CC-licensed media.
* Europeana: Images. Includes PD, CC-licensed media, and copyrighted media. Media is hosted at the source organisations.
* Flickr: Images. Includes PD, CC-licensed and copyrighted media.

More content in the future
Storing and reading user-contributed images
The core of Wikidocumentaries is to facilitate weaving personal, less-recognized or local materials into the big data fabric. In order to do so, we need to solve in which services to direct the users to store their materials and how to make them recognizable for reading into Wikidocumentaries. Such services include local history projects such as the Topotheques, or a global service such as Internet Archive, or commercial services like Google Photos. All of them require the materials to be CC licensed in order to make them available for remix at Wikidocumentaries.

Reading more material types
There are many exciting media sources available for reuse, such as newspaper archives, sound libraries, video and film archives, bibliographic resources, full-text literary works, historical maps, data repositories with or without linked data to name a few. Any of them can be used to discovering ever more material and to provide more chances for remixing the works.

Which CC license conditions can be used together in a remix?
This table shows which license condition are compatible with each other when creating remixes and which are the recommended licenses for the adaptations, also called the Adapter's license. The ShareAlike condition makes the choice mandatory while in other cases it is a minimum restriction and will ease the reuse for downstream users.
Derivative work/adaptation/remix
A derivative work – it can also be called an adaptation or a remix – is created when one or more works are altered in a way that creates a new copyrightable work.

Derivative works are created for example when works are translated, or adapted from one medium to the other, like creating a film out of a book.

In order for the resulting work to be protected by copyright, a level of originality must be presented, and the level varies by jurisdiction.

Alterations that produce an adaptation
* Cropping
* Color correcting
* Translating
* Adapting for another medium
* Syncing a musical work with a moving image is an adaptation regardless of what applicable copyright law may otherwise provide.
* The data about the media, the metadata, cannot be transformed either unless the license of the image allows. Many aggregators now require that the metadata of their partnering institutions must be in CC0 to allow the aggregators to clean, format and enrich the metadata without additional permissions.

{{WDX-note|Wikidocumentaries reuse scenarios that create adaptations

* Postcard scenario

Not an adaptation, free to share
The reuse is not considered an adaptation if the new work is not based on or derived from the original work.
* Technical format-shifting (for example, converting a licensed work from a digital format to a physical copy)
* Fixing minor problems with spelling or punctuation
* Reproducing and putting works together into a collection/compilation
* Including an image in connection with text, as in a blog post, a powerpoint, or an article

Part of a collection/compilation
In Wikidocumentaries we are interacting with several layers or collections. Images are released by museums, archives and libraries from their collections. They traverse through the collections of the aggregators and become part of different compilations on the Wikidocumentaries website.

None of these transitions changes the images or their copyright status. Wikidocumentaries displays the images along with the attribution to the original creators. Out of courtesy, Wikidocumentaries also displays the originating institution and the aggregator.

Wikidocumentaries topic pages are composed of components that display data about the topic. One displays people related to the topic while another displays works depicting the topic. The components can be viewed in different ways: visual gallery and list views are currently available, timeline and map views will be created. The data and the resulting imagery in the components can be filtered, faceted and sorted (although not yet).
* Sources: Currently, the topic components display data from Wikidata (CC0), illustrated with images from Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA or more open), which makes them unproblematic to create. In the future other sources could be used as well. What are the requirements for licensing?
* Is this a remix or not? Data is mashed up with other data, so datawise it is a remix. The data license must allow this. In parts of the world databases are not protected, but in the EU they are. Although datasets can now be licensed with CC4 licenses, they still require attribution, which is difficult to provide in this kind of mashups. Therefore the CC0 waiver is the best option for data to be used. Images are displayed with text, icons and shading on top. This is not enough to produce a remix.
The image remains unchanged, but the enriched data is created and saved in Wikidocumentaries. I assume this would constitute an adaptation of the metadata. If metadata is separately licensed (preferably with CC0), this is possible under ND. But if ND covers also metadata (is not separately licensed), I assume the work becomes an adaptation. This tool does not exist yet, but could be created. The user can pick any image and create a postcard of it by cropping the image, altering the colors, adding text and graphics on top. Graphic styles can imitate styles digitized from material shared on the platform.
* Which copyright statuses, exceptions or licenses are good for the postcard images?
* Is there a difference if the user only creates the postcard, prints it out for herself, or saves it in the system for others to further modify and make use of?
* What is the classification of a digitized/extracted graphic style? Is it a derivative or an independent work?
We are currently looking into experimenting with mapstories. They are narratives that combine still images, text, map views, audio and video. Each frame includes a combination of several mediatypes, and the frames can be arranged to different compositions: slideshow-like, webpage-like, or map-like and played automatically or by user interaction. The materials can be arranged on a timeline. Are the mapstories remixes or collections? My interpretation is that although most of the work could be considered a collection, it becomes an adaptation when media is arranged and synced on a timeline.
* Good examples of mapstories are these for example.
The user can pick any scanned map found via Wikidocumentaries and rectify it. The process produces a distorted map image that aligns with a digital world map and can be used as a layer on top of it. The resulting ground control points can be saved and used to distort the original map again, also in another environment.
* If the distorted map is not saved, only the resulting ground control points, can a ND license be used?

Currently all articles are from Wikipedia, but we want to allow writing articles in the local wiki as well. Wikipedia articles can be translated with Content Translation tool between any Wikipedia languages. This would be desirable for Wikidocumentaries articles as well. A precondition is that the articles are licensed permissively enough for that.
* See the translations in action at Wikidocumentaries

Wikidocumentaries licensing
Wikidocumentaries itself is a collection that brings together content and tools. Each of the components has their own copyright status, and Wikidocumentaries service has its own. So do the user contributions on the site.

Wikidocumentaries service
Wikidocumentaries license is CC BY 4.0, which covers for example the layouts and the original texts.

User contributions
All user contributions that are considered data, will be licensed with CC0. Default license for remixes will be CC BY 4.0, but the user may also choose CC0.

Translations
The user interface translations are created in translatewiki.net and licensed CC BY 3.0.

Source code
The source code of the user interface is licensed with GNU General Public License.

Creative Commons licenses display
Creative Commons licenses are displayed in varied ways in the source media outlets. The Creative Commons own documentation materials can be used to add the rights links and displays. https://github.com/creativecommons/cc-legal-tools-data/blob/main/docs/licenses/metadata.yaml

Conclusions
* In order to ensure the compatibility of the source materials for remix, they should be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons before they can be remixed.
* There should be a similar normalizing process for user-contributed materials that fall outside the project scope of Wikimedia Commons.
* It would be useful to display media with restrictive licensing to a certain extent. It would help discovery of materials and give the opportunity to work with their rights holders to consider more open licenses. The media may also be falsely restricted or licensed, and displaying them would allow identifying that. Media with restricting licensing conditions could only be viewed, not remixed.

Wikidocumentary is is a layered, time-based presentation that comprises of simple elements, and it can be viewed in a few different ways.

What could a wikidocumentary look like?
A frame
</gallery>

Interfaces
* Web interface, page layout: Scrolling or clicking between frames. Maybe the user can change the layout and mode?
* Sit back cinema (auto-advance), full-screen, timed
* Mobile orienteering mode (random access). Frames are located in places where it's possible to enter. There must be flexibility in the timelines to allow for different transition times. Use soundscapes and other media loops, trigger frames by proximity etc.

Mobile
* Different screen estate
* Possibility to easily record images, sound, video or location
* Possibility to connect to other contributors or share

Interactions
* Things that the user can be asked to do: Take pictures, record a fact, record audio, record the coordinates...
* Wikidocumentaries as gradually evolving presentations: Users can add an aspect to an existing wikidocumentary.

Where could the wikidocumentaries be seen?
* In the header part of each topic page when the topic of the wikidocumentary is the topic itself. There could be automatically generated wikidocumentaries.
* In a wikidocumentaries component on the topic page when the wikidocumentary has related content to the topic
* Shared on social media

How would the wikidocumentaries be found?
* A wikidocumentary usually touches on many topics, and there must be a topic-independent place for displaying them and a way to find them.

Elements
Frames
Frames are the building blocks of a wikidocumentary.
<gallery mode=packed heights=200>
Basic blocks.png|Frames follow each other freely in time.
Timeline blocks.png|When time-based media is used as the backbone of the wikidocumentary, frames are played at specific "timecodes" on the main timeline.

Frame properties
<gallery mode=packed heights=200>
Frame properties.png
</gallery>
* Image or video. Later, multiple media files and an image sequence may be made possible.
** Captions
* Frame audio can be a soundscape or a loop / generative sound to be played while user is in the frame. It can be any sound that plays only once.
* Frame title and text. Possibly rich text with more images. Links.
* Background
** Location. Each frame can be depicted by a coordinate location. This can be used in different ways. It can be plotted on a map or it is a location to go to to experience AR content.
** Map, with on opportunity to change the style
** Background overlay layer Georeferenced imagery can be used as a background layer. It can be an old map, aerial image, aerial video, or alternatively a large zoomable image. It can also be a video overlay.
** Data overlay can be geographic data plotted on the map or annotations on an image or a map. A data point in a time series can be the basis for a frame.

Timeline
* Audio track. The audio track can be a narrative, a musical piece, or an ambient recording for example. Frames are anchored on the timeline. It can be an audio file or the audio track of a video file, or the audio can be recorded in the app.
* Video
* Time series data (Wikidata query, file). Examples include travel route, any animated thematic, statistical map.
* Transitions: Soundscapes, specific content. Data animations run and set the pace of the interval.
Collection editor.png|Collection editor/organizer
Map editor.png|Map/frame editor
Voiceover recorder.png|Voiceover recorder
</gallery>
* Timeline editor When the starting material is a recording, all frames have to be placed on the timeline. The user can change the position of the frame on the timeline and enter the frame editor for more details.
* Text editor If the base material is a text or an article, the text editor is best for that use. Wikipedia articles could be automatically sliced into frames using AI technology that is used in some presentation program (which one?)
* Collection editor/organizer When the starting point is a collection of images or Wikidata items, the collection editor can be used to arrange them in time. The user may enter any of the frames for more detail.
* Map/frame editor In this editor view the user can control all the individual elements within the frame. The user may add a soundtrack, and then it needs to be edited in the timeline view.
* Voiceover recorder The user may record an audio track to the whole documentary, or frame audio for a single frame.

Actions
Creating Wikidocumentaries
* Start from an article Select Create wikidocumentary from the article actions menu.
** External articles do not have a place yet in Wikidocumentaries. That and the use of Wikisource should also be considered.
* Start from images
** In the Images section, choose a number of images and select Create wikidocumentary from the images actions menu.
** When image collections become available: Create a collection of images. In the collection actions menu, select Create wikidocumentary.
* Start from items
** In any of the Wikidocumentaries components, select Create wikidocumentary from the component actions menu.
** When custom search becomes available: In the results actions menu, select Create wikidocumentary.
* Start with a sound file or recording There's currently no component for displaying sounds in Wikidocumentaries. Starting with a sound could happen by selecting a sound file or recording sound to a new empty wikidocumentary, or adding a sound file or recording a soundtrack to a collection of frames.
* Start with a map
** Add locations to start a new wikidocumentary by importing items with coordinates
** Add points to a base map or a scanned map.
* Create empty Wikidocumentary
** Interfaces for finding and adding content from within the editor TBD

Modals
* New frame / Move frame / Delete frame
* Search/Add image/sound/video

Map-based wikidocumentary -- This has not been cleaned from outdated information
Based on frames that consist of several parameters
* Coordinate location
* View angle
* Time value
* Visual media
** Image plane and view angle for overlays (on the map background, in 3D space)
** Medium (video, image, image series, image pair)
* Headline & subheader
* Text
** Hyperlinks?
** Media
* Audio
** Fixed timeline throughout presentation, such as a narrative
** Fixed timeline over one frame
** Soundscape loops or generative soundscapes
** Effects, synchronized sound
* Map settings
** Map style
** Animations
** Layers
* Timeline display

Display options
Map
* Map is the base element
* Each frame represents a point from which the map is seen
* Map settings are different for each map frame
* An aerial image/video/illustration may overlay the map
* A media element may be added to the 3D view
** An image pair can be viewed with a revealing slider
* Map remains controllable in frames

Text
* Text can be scrollable including parallax elements.
* Media can be used as part of layout in the text stream. Media can be expanded to cover the full screen.
* Transition from frame to the other may also different, such as a crossfade between media elements.

Audio
Locative elements
* Frame display triggered by GPS info
* Dynamic output
** soundscape, colours, alternative content, nearby geotagged content
* depending on data
** proximity to a coordinate location
** weather data
** time of day, time of year...

User-generated
* Interface to create frames and configure settings

Generated
* AI-assisted frame generation from Wikipedia articles
* User-enhanced in the same interface

To think
* Animations of time-series, how do they relate to frames? Can frames be marked as time intervals, or points in time?
* Can the wikidocumentaries be multidimensional, including for example temporal depth across its own timeline.

Using AR
* The map background is used in navigating between frames. Frames can be accessed in random order.
* The frames can display AR content. Ideas?

The Central Park Archives is a project in Maunula, Helsinki, as part of an ongoing Maunula Commons project. It is an exploration into co-archiving in the context of the nature of a neighbourhood.

Background
Content
Possible scenarios
Enriching Maunula content in Wikimedia projects
* Straightforward, allows immediate Wikidocumentaries display
* Prevents displaying materials with restricted access

Saving Maunula materials into other repositories that are connected to Wikidocumentaries
* Flickr existing
* To explore: Internet Archive, Google, Topotheques
* Something for custom datasets
* Something for audio

Local archive
It is interesting to evaluate if it is realistic to envision a local Wikibase for Maunula Commons. The project would allow storing linked data items, that can be mashed up in Wikidocumentaries with other open content and it can act as a sandbox for Wikidata. The use of the Maunula Commons Wikibase as a standalone project should be engaging as well.

Ideally, the project could start with wiki articles that have corresponding data items in the Wikibase. The MVP would be to build that connecting structure.

Additionally it would make sense to save images in the Maunula Commons Wikibase. This could act as a pilot for creating federated mediabases.

Appearance in Wikidocumentaries
Connecting data across projects does not seem feasible in near future.
* Reading Maunula Commons wikibase items into Wikidocumentaries if data structures can be defined.
** Data items: Places, people (federated data content, long-term goal) requires federation between MC, WDX and Wikidata
** Images: Assuming images can be tagged with concepts from either MC, WDX or Wikidata

New displays/functions in Wikidocumentaries
Mobile view
* Fix existing problems preventing proper mobile display
* Mobile view with a map and audio (+ images?)
Map
* Display a dataset, result set
* Where to store a custom dataset? How to link it to items? Tagging with QID?
* Nearby
* Style
Locative audio
* Location-aware playlist
* Store audio clips
* Read into Wikidocumentaries
COVID-19 Global Dashboard
2020-04-02T07:48:54Z

Admin: /* Workspace */

The COVID-19 Global Dashboard is a web application to provide an overview of the qualities and content of Wikipedia articles about COVID-19 across languages and offer intelligent data input mechanisms to address knowledge gaps. It is based on work in the Wikidocumentaries project.

The Wikipedia articles are the most comprehensive source of information of encyclopedic content about the COVID-19 pandemic and topics related to it. However, the information in inconsistent across languages. It is crucial that all language groups can provide up-to-date and correct information about the pandemic.

Getting an overview of information in Wikipedias
The Wikimedia COVID-19 Global Dashboard will benefit the Wikimedia volunteer editors and translators in evaluating the consistency and quality of Wikipedia articles about COVID-19 and help them direct their efforts most effectively. The information is structured with the help on Wikidata that connects the articles to each other. The translators will be able to detect discrepancies between the language versions, and compare aspects of the articles such as their timeliness, editing activity, scope, maturity, illustrations, and use of source materials.

Enhancing data with the help of the Dashboard
The linked data in Wikidata helps to locate additional sources of information that have not yet been added to Wikidata or Wikipedia articles. Information is collected to Wikidata from the Wikipedia articles as well. This will in turn assist in locating more information.

The Wikimedia COVID-19 Global Dashboard will connect Wikidata, Wikipedias, Wikimedia Commons, TranslateWiki, Scholia, OpenStreetMap and open resources of scientific content together.

Navigation
Navigating the articles
* The first way to navigate will be based on Wikidata graphs where the user can navigate from one article to the other by following the Wikidata links.
* The second way will be a predefined but dynamically updated table of COVID-19 articles.

Article title
* The page displays the current article title, description and aliases in the user's language

Logging into Wikimedia account
* To be able to use editing features the user must log into the Wikimedia account via OAuth

Language chooser
* The user can choose any interface language

Museon puutarhan perennat

Sirkku haastatteli 1960-70 -lukujen vaihteessa silloisia Vallilan siirtolapuutarhan viljelijöitä, joista monet olivat olleet alueella jo paikan perustamisesta lähtien 1930-luvulla. Kuvastossa on yli 120 kasvia!

Osa kasveista on istutettu Nalif-omenapuun alle.

Finding related content
Several components can ideally display content from sources across the web. The goal is to enrich Wikimedia projects with content from the sources using the available tools. We currently read some image sources, but the content could ideally include newspapers, sounds, archival material, films, videos, literature, magazines, scientific articles etc.

The source content could be used in many ways: It could be imported as such, the metadata could be consolidated with metadata of similar objects from other outlets, or the data/metadata could be used to enrich items in Wikimedia projects. In these scenarios the open projects (Wikimedia, OSM) are seen as central databases which store the collectively enriched data and can serve that back to the institutions.

Selecting data for the query
* Labels and aliases in all languages
** Not all languages can be handled by an API. The unsuitable ones need to be filtered our in the preprocessing phase.
** If the main languages of the API are known, the query can use labels of that language as a primary option.
** Preprocessing can collect all necessary values and send to the local API. The local component for a specific API can arrange the data suitable for each API, for example concatenate the query strings in different ways, using AND or OR.
* Item's location can be used to narrow down search results or to distinguish from namesakes.
* The dates of the item can be used to narrow down search results. This is especially useful with maps.
* For maps the zoom level or the scale can be calculated using the size of the area the item covers.

# GLAM makes available images and their metadata through their public API. Wikidocumentaries uses many Wikidata properties from the current topic to query that.
# When reading the data through the Wikidocumentaries API, the metadata is normalized using a different transformation for each GLAM.
# The metadata from different GLAMs is displayed in a uniform format in the Wikidocumentaries metadata display as strings.
# When an image is saved to Wikimedia projects, users can reconcile string values with Wikidata items. String values can be saved as well, they will be available for reconciling later.
# In the Wikidocumentaries metadata interface, the string values are replaced by reconciled Wikidata items. Differences between the source data from the GLAM and Wikidata, such as recent changes in the GLAM's metadata, can also be highlighted.
# Maybe the GLAM could query Wikidocumentaries for changed information?

Consolidate data from different sources for the same item
Especially if Wikidocumentaries decides to store images or their metadata locally, these scenarios become available. Similar images from different sources can be detected. Their metadata can be compared, and the user is asked to verify the correct information. The updated data is saved in the central repository (Wikimedia Commons) with a reference to the source that provided this information. One of the information types that can be compared is the copyright status.
https://wikidocumentaries.wmcloud.org/wiki/User_registration
User registration
2019-05-15T11:42:38Z

Susanna Ånäs: /* Individuals */

Requirements
* Users are required to use their real names.
* The user accounts can be connected to Wikimedia accounts through OAuth to allow editing features.
* There will be two types of users: individuals and organisations
* Users can form groups
* Users and groups can associate with topics, content, discussion and more

Architecture and data
* Wikidocumentaries can use the MediaWiki user management for everything that it allows.
* Wikidocumentaries stores data about users that go beyond what MediaWiki records. We need to solve how this data is recorded. Where to store user’s links with organisations, groups, content and discussion? It should not be publicly editable in the Wikibase. (Maybe it could be unprotected.) Can it be stored in MediaWiki or do we need to create additional databases for that data?
** It has been suggested that user data about links and associations could be stored in a Wikibase item, and the user account would be connected with this item somehow so that it would not disclose any sensitive data (email only?).

Users and groups
Individuals
* Users register with their real names.
* Users have a Wikidocumentaries user page. Display
** user's name and affiliations with institutions and groups
** topics of interest
** media collections
** discussions the user is engaged with
** related tasks
** The connected external accounts (Wikimedia for editing Wikimedia project, later possibly OSM and others) are not disclosed. Later perhaps the user would be able to decide to display the linked accounts. Not important.

Organisations
* Creating an organisation should be a controlled mechanism. The institution can claim the identity and authority to assign people to it.
** The organisation can grant individual users rights to represent the organisation and/or accept requests to join.
* Organisation page. Display
** organisation information is retrieved from Wikidata and edited there or with connected interfaces. For example, Wikidocumentaries can display a form with basic info.
** organisation's representatives
** groups the organisation is affiliated with
** organisation's collections are recorded in Wikidata and images that are in those collections are associated with these entries. A feasible scenario is to upload an entire collection of images for a given institution when all keywords used in the collection are associated with Wikidata. <illustration needed, external>
** related tasks
** discussion takes the form of a help desk, Q & A

Groups
* Any user should be able to create groups and join groups
* Group page
** Display individuals and organisations who belong to the group
** related topics, content, tasks
** group discussion

Linked content
Several kinds of content can be linked with users and groups. Not all combination may be necessary

Topics
Institutions, groups and individuals can all associate with a topic. By associating with a topic, an institution becomes an authority about this topic and will be expected to provide help and answers about the topics. Related groups and institutions will be displayed on the topic page, individual users will not, but their pages should be accessible via a less prominent way.
* Individual topics
* Topic domains defined with the help of a shape expression. The topics should also include subtopics or emerging more detailed topics, be a dynamic collection.

Images
* Individual images
* User-defined collection of images, selected one-by-one.
* Image collections defined by the institution/collection data on the image
* User-defined dynamic image collections defined by search conditions.

Tasks
* Tasks created for other users to participate in: Who is in this image, Where was this picture taken etc.

Discussions
* Discussion is attached to topics, images, tasks, groups, users, institutions and perhaps some more items.
* The discussions should be accessible by anyone and aggregated as feeds on the front page, the users page, the group, institution, the item? page.
* A discussion framework should be used instead of a bespoke solution.

Use case scenarios
Setup
* As an individual/institution I want to log into Wikidocumentaries because I want to edit Wikimedia projects / I want to enrich data on Wikidocumentaries / I want to manage our institutions's data
** When an organisation account is created it is associated with an existing organisation in Wikidata. This will have to go through some kind of verification.
** An organisation account request will be made by an existing user account who then becomes the first associated individual for that organisation.
* As an institution I want to make a user a representative of my organisation
* As an individual I want to become the representative of an organisation
* As a user/institution I want to set up / join a group

Activity
* As a user I want to create a collection and choose images to the collection.
* As a user or a group I want to create a dynamic collection of images based on criteria. I might be interested to get a collection of images from a certain are and period for a photo safari.
* As an institution I want to manage my collections, prepare their upload to Commons and oversee their metadata.
* As a user or a group I want to define my area of interest (topics) by creating a shape expression. I want to add individual items to the dynamic collection.

Admin: /* How to add a new user interface language to Wikidocumentaries? */

Wikidocumentaries is multilingual. The user interface language can be changed to any available language on Wikimedia projects.

Translations
* The item information comes from Wikidata, and the translations are managed there.
* The article comes from that language Wikipedia, and it is edited there.
* The UI is translated to any of the languages in TranslateWiki.

UI languages
* The default user interface language is the browser language.
* The user may change the interface language of the site to another language, if it has been translated to that language.
* The language menu displays the available languages in alphabetical order. Later, custom language fallback order will be made possible.
* Even if the UI is not translated to a language, it is still possible to navigate using the language code in the site URL. For example https://wikidocumentaries-demo.wmflabs.org/Q32815?language=dag.
* The menu is created in UILanguageMenu.vue.
* English is used as the ultimate fallback option.

How to add a new user interface language to Wikidocumentaries?
* Navigate to TranslateWiki.
* Sign up.
* Select your language and start translating missing messages or checking existing ones.

Process
* The UI language must have at least 25% translated messages to be imported to the project.
* TranslateWiki sends translated files to Wikidocumentaries twice a week. The json translation files are put together in wikidocumentaries-ui/src/store/messages.js. A new language is not automatically added to Wikidocumentaries. Please alert about new language translations by emailing wikidocumentaries@gmail.com.

Language fallback
Wikidata language fallback is described here. Can that be utilized?

Language fallback mechanisms
Language fallback is handled differently in different cases. The MediaWiki API uses one mechanism and the SPARQL queries use another. Different components are based on different queries.

MediWiki API
* Topic title and description
* Map labels
* Wikidata component values

SPARQL query
These use SPARQL, and the fallback chain is declared in each query.
* The works, locations, related people and depicted in.

Fallback chain guideline
The desired display language is based on the following fallback chain.
# UI language (English default, user-defined.)
# Topic's original language (how?)
# Best option in the user-defined language fallback chain. The fallback chain is initially a hard-coded list of languages. Later on, the user may construct this list.
# English
# Any language ordered by...

Article
* The article is primarily displayed in the UI language
* If the article does not exist in the UI language
*# a message to select another language is displayed.
*# Alternatively, the article can be displayed in the best available language option of the language fallback chain.
*# It is possible to create article generators that create stub articles from recorded facts.
* The article language menu displays a list of available article languages. The list is scrollable and displays all available languages in the following order.
*# Available languages in the order of the user-defined language fallback chain. The fallback chain is initially a hard-coded list of languages. Later on, the user may construct this list.
*# English
*# Any language ordered by...
* The menu is created in ArticleLanguageMenu.vue.

Search conditions
See also other search conditions in the Images page.
* The topic title is used to search for images
* Additional labels in different languages, properties and aliases may be used also
** Labels and aliases in primary languages
** Also use values of name properties if available.
* The primary language for the search term is chosen based on
** API service's preferred language(s)
** Topic's original language (how is this reasoned?)
** English

Top language-related issues to fix
* RTL support in the UI, T255530

Susanna Ånäs: /* General URI */

URIs
General URI
domain/[source]QID/[language]/[article title]?language=[language]

where
* domain = wikidocumentaries.io
* source = empty for wikidata items, [letter] for Wikidocumentaries items
* language = optional, overrides user preferences and browser default
* article title = optional, Wikipedia article name in the language of the language option. Should not be used to resolve the destination
* ?language=[language] = temporary UI language parameter

Examples
* wikidocumentaries.io/Q5893434/fi/Vapaamuurarin_hauta (full version for Vue page for indexing, Wikidata item)
* wikidocumentaries.io/SQ123456/en/New_small_topic (full version for Vue page for indexing, Wikidocumentaries item)
* wikidocumentaries.io/Q5893434 (minimum version for Vue page, Wikidata item)
* wikidocumentaries.io/SQ123456 (minimum version for Vue page, local Wikidocumentaries item)
* wikidocumentaries.io/wiki/Q123456 (data page for a Wikidocumentaries item)
* wikidocumentaries.io/wiki/New_small_topic/fi (Wikidocumentaries article in Finnish - check this!)

Wikipedia article URL
The Wikipedia article will be resolved to a Wikidata-based URL described above on a one-by-one basis. The link structure to send to the router is:
* domain/wikipedia/language/article_title

Example:

* wikidocumentaries.io/wikipedia/fi/Vapaamuurarin_hauta?language=fi, where the last language declaration is a temporary solution.

Susanna Ånäs:

The dropdown menu is used in different places with slight variations.

* The search pulldown in the main toolbar
* The pulldowns in section headers
* The image action pulldowns over images

Basic structure
* The menu is displayed by an icon in the toolbar
* On hover it is displayed negative.
** On toolbars the icon is black, negative is a white icon in black background. The background is 100% height of the containing toolbar (40x40px).
** On an image the icon is white, negative is black on white square 30x30px.

Different menus
* Basic menu with selectable rows
* Settings panel is a flyout menu. It needs to stay visible and not disappear with mouseout.

Persistent menu for nested elements
<gallery mode=slideshow>
</gallery>

Different rows
* Title row, same for all menus
* Row with a submenu or a link to a modal or a tool is displayed with a caret pointing right at the end of the menu item.
* Subselection inside dropdown row is ore instant.
* End row: Create item, show more, show all. One or more per row.

Other controls
* Long result lists can be displayed with a scrollbar

Thoughts about mobile.

It is likely that people would be interested to engage with Wikidocumentaries via mobile maybe more than on desktop. Different tasks are more suitable for different platforms.

Mobile activities

Mobile style
There will be modified page and module style for small devices. Tools should perhaps vary based on device.

The site uses Wikifont icons created by Mun May Tee-Galloway.

The iconset has not been updated, but I suggest we continue developing it as an open source project. The font has been forked in https://github.com/Wikidocumentaries/WikiFont.

Let's list missing icons here first!

Houses for example could be displayed in 3D.

Some ideas:
* Drawings of a building could be mapped onto a rough model of the building and displayed in quasi-3D.
* Geolocated images could be used to create point clouds that can help with further geotagging.
* Openly available 3D-models of houses could be displayed on the topic page

Discussions can be attached to any topic, image or other recorded resource, creations by users. What are the best ways of displaying them and accessing them?

Some initial thoughts:
* The discussion platform is other than the Media Wiki discussion, because the items the discussion is attached to are more varied. It is unclear if the discussion namespace should be used at all.
* The discussion could be a separate section in the topic page and the image viewer.
* It would be good to be able to access discussions that are hosted on other platforms:
** Social media, where an image is posted. Maybe even only display that discussion exists there with a correct link.
** Content source platform (eg Finna, Flickr, Ajapaik etc). Possibly include this kind of discussion with the resource display.
Project page

Admin: /* Topics */

Project page is a community that has a common interest. It includes
* Branches of topics
* Individual users as community members.
* Expert users, usually organisations. Perhaps individuals could also become expert users.

Topics
* Project scope is a set of topic branches or hierarchies. If the project is about Punkaharju, it will include people who lived there with some amount of family relations, places, insitutions, shops and buidings located there, historical events that took place etc. It can be more limited, such as forestry in Punkaharju. This may be limiting in practice because of incompleteness of existing data. All related data should have mentions about the location as well as the topic. Therefore it may be wise to be more inclusive than exclusive.
* Likely the topic is a Shape expression

Project display on topic pages
The project and expert members are displayed in the related topic pages header. If it gets crowded, the settings may be adjusted.

Topics display on the project page
* Included topics can be seen in the project page. What is the data we could show about each topic on the project page?
* A tree view giving an overview of all included topics would be useful. In this case the displayed data about each item should be very limited. Paste here some visualisation ideas!

Members
Members can maintain discussion around the topics of the project, create tasks such as polls or identification drives.

Individual members
* Individuals may become admin members

Organisation members
* Organisations are expected to act as expert members, giving advice and answering questions, sharing content, maintaining bibliographies.
* Organisations may also perform admin tasks, patrol content in their expertise area.

Display on other pages
* The project/community is displayed on topic page header which it deals with.

Discussion
Discussion about topics and content related to topics in the interest of the community should be aggregated in the page or accessed from the page.

Tasks
When tasks are made, they can be assigned to / associated with branches of topics or content communities directly. This way they will be visible in the community page as well as the feed of members of those communities.
Organisation page

Admin: /* Organisation-generated-content */

Organisations are users like individuals. Their page is integrated with the Wikidocumentaries page of the organisation.

Organisations take part in projects, and can take an expert role there. Organisations may have Q&A functionalities. They can write about their expertise. It would be desirable if they could patrol content within their expertise. Let's brainstorm!

Roles
* What roles are possible in MediaWiki?
* Administrator can add or accept representatives or followers. How to become an administrator? How to handle disputes and frauds?

Organisation-generated-content
An organisation account can claim a Wikidata item and add content to its page into separate sections.

Expertise
The organisation can define an area of expertise as a Wikidata shape expression. The organization's account will then be visible in and linked from all topics matching that expression.

Q&A
Visitors can post questions to topic pages that the museum has expertise in, and the museum professionals will answer them. Maybe anyone can take part in the discussion. Questions in topics that are claimed by an organisation will be displayed in the organisation page as well as the topic page. In case several organisations have claimed a topic, the discussion is displayed in all their pages.

Tasks
The museum professional can post tasks to topic pages or their own page directly, and anyone can participate in them. They can be questions, like "Do you have a personal story of this event?" or tasks such as "Which one of the people in these portraits is older?"

Contact details
It makes no sense in maintaining the contact details in Wikidocumentaries or even Wikidata. The data can be retrieved from somewhere (Wikidata + OSM + other??)

Content management tools
* Adding content (manage collection data in Wikidata)
* Upload media (batch upload to Wikimedia Commons)
* Patrol tools (Aggregated view, watchlists)
* Statistics from Wikimedia projects

Projects
* Organisation can participate in a project.

Dependencies
* User registration
* Use of local Wikibase

User page is the public facing description of the user. It is desirable to have users present themselves.

Users should register with their real names. They can link any social media accounts, authority ID's and Wikidata items about them if they wish, but this is not required. They can also link their Wikimedia accounts to be able to move between the projects, but for privacy reasons it is not required.

To protect the members' privacy, we should make sure that only the account holders themselves are able to add this information. This may be tricky with the MediaWiki platform.
https://wikidocumentaries.wmcloud.org/wiki/Uploading_images
Uploading images
2018-12-13T10:53:52Z

Admin: /* Comments */

Images are generally not uploaded to the project, but we might change our minds. Currently the basic principle is that we connect to services where the user can manage the collection and grant access to a selected set of images through an API.

We might also consider providing a way to store images elsewhere, but provide the upload tool in Wikidocumentaries.

Requirements
* Individuals and organisations can make available their openly licensed images in Wikidocumentaries one by one or en masse.
* Wikidocumentaries could also capture relevant open files from the web via CC Search.
* The ideal is not to store images or original metadata locally, only metadata that has been enriched and changed in Wikidocumentaries.
* When an image gets "saved" into Wikidocumentaries, it's web location and hash are stored.
* If the image and it's metadata are available elsewhere, more metadata is not saved. If the image is "uploaded" to Wikidocumentaries and cannot be accessed live, all it's metadata is saved in Wikidocumentaries and the image file is saved in yet an unknown place. It may be, that we end up saving the image file in Wikidocumentaries, and clear the files into Wikimedia Commons and the backup location on a regular basis.
* When an image is enriched in Wikidocumentaries (geolocated, text altered, name linked to Wikidata), it's metadata is read live from the source. Changes are saved into Wikidocumentaries along with the original values.
* When image metadata matures enough on Wikidocumentaries (linkable data becomes linked, strings get formatted to correct datatypes etc.) they can be automatically read to Wikimedia Commons.
* Not all images will ever be suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Those will remain the way described above.

Mass upload
Following is a sketch of mass uploading from different sources to Wikidocumentaries. It is VERY preliminary, and the goal is to explore the possibilities by sketching them out.

<gallery mode=slideshow>
Upload images menu small en.png
Upload images File or folder small en.png
Upload images Include metadata small en.png
Upload images Include metadata form small en.png
Upload images Metadata added small en.png
Upload images Metadata associate small en.png
</gallery>

Comments
* The form takes up a lot of space, it could be placed in a dropdown under the Settings icon.
* It might be possible to store the user's images in the Internet Archive - to be explored. See https://archive-it.org/. Follow up on similar approaches.
* Refining metadata would be a natural next step. However, we should keep the process simple in the beginning and just match the source columns to Wikidocumentaries properties.
** Refining interface would have common elements with the Metadata editor, the Annotation tool and the Geolocating tool.
